The Story of Miharu Takizakura and the Cherry Tree Guardian
A spring journey to encounter the overwhelming beauty of Miharu Takizakura, one of Japan's three greatest cherry trees, over 1,000 years old
The Takizakura in Miharu, Fukushima Prefecture is a Beni-shidare cherry tree estimated to be over 1,000 years old and is designated as a Natural Monument, counted among Japan's three greatest cherry trees. When the giant tree, standing 13.5 meters tall with branches extending 25 meters east to west, reaches full bloom, the pale pink flowers draping like a waterfall from the drooping branches create a breathtaking sight. It typically reaches peak bloom in mid-April, and the fantastical illuminated blossoms at night are not to be missed. The surrounding area also features Sakura Lake and the preserved streetscape of a castle town, and through the cherry tree guardian's guided tour, you can hear the stories of the people who have protected and passed down this thousand-year-old tree.
