Hokkaido's oldest festival, continuing for over 370 years. A spectacular summer festival where 13 ornate floats parade through Esashi's historic streets.
Held every August, the Esashi Ojingū Togyo Festival is Hokkaido's oldest festival with a history spanning over 370 years. Thirteen luxurious and ornate floats, symbolizing the prosperity Esashi gained from herring fishing, parade through the town's historic streets. The floats, carefully preserved by each neighborhood, are decorated with dolls brought from Kyoto and Osaka, evoking the legacy of kitamaebune (northern trading ship) culture. During the festival period, the entire town is filled with vibrant excitement.
