The head temple of the Soto school with over 770 years of history as a Zen monastery
Eiheiji is the head temple of the Soto school, founded in 1244 by Zen Master Dogen, and remains an active training monastery where approximately 150 monks pursue rigorous practice today. The serene grounds are surrounded by towering cedar trees and feature seven main temple structures connected by beautiful corridors that visitors can explore. Zazen meditation and sutra copying experiences are also popular.
