Hachinohe Enburi
The Hachinohe Enburi is a vigorous spring-welcoming rice-planting dance performed to pray for a bountiful harvest, featuring dancers wearing eboshi hats who thrust sticks into the earth.
Held annually from February 17-20, the Hachinohe Enburi is a traditional rice-planting dance performed to pray for a bountiful harvest and is designated as a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property. Dancers called taiyu wear eboshi hats and perform a vigorous dance, thrusting sticks called jangi into the earth to announce the arrival of spring, making it an iconic symbol of Hachinohe. In the morning, approximately 30 Enburi groups gather at Chojazan Shinra Shrine for the 'Issai Suri,' showcasing a spectacular group dance. The evening 'Kagaribi Enburi' is illuminated by flames, creating a magical atmosphere where visitors can experience the fervent spirit of winter in Tohoku.
