Akiyoshido
One of Japan's largest limestone caves. A mysterious underground world created over 300 million years.
Akiyoshido is one of Japan's largest limestone caves located within Akiyoshidai Quasi-National Park, with approximately 1km of the total 10km length open to tourists as a sightseeing course. Inside the cave, there are grand natural artworks created over 300 million years, including limestone terraces called 'Hyakumaisara' (Hundred Saucers) that resemble rice paddies, and a giant stalactite called 'Kōgon-bashira' (Golden Pillar) that stands 15 meters high. The cave maintains a comfortable temperature of approximately 17°C year-round, cool in summer and warm in winter. Above ground, Akiyoshidai is Japan's largest karst plateau, offering a unique landscape where white limestone formations are scattered across green grasslands.
