Tsuruga Castle (Aizu Wakamatsu Castle)
A famous castle that served as the stage for the Boshin War. Its red-tiled keep is unique in Japan, and looks beautiful when combined with cherry blossoms and autumn foliage.
Tsuruga Castle, the symbol of Aizu Wakamatsu, is a famous castle that originated from the Higashi-Kurogawa Mansion built by Ashina Naomori in 1384. It is known as an impregnable fortress that withstood approximately one month of siege warfare during the Boshin War. In 2011, it was re-roofed with red tiles as they were during the late Edo period, becoming Japan's only red-tiled keep. Inside the keep is a local history museum where you can learn about Aizu's history. In spring, approximately 1,000 cherry blossoms adorn the castle, and the illuminated night cherry blossoms are equally spectacular.
