Visiting Hofu Tenmangu, the Deity of Learning
Learn the history of learning and the traces of Sugawara no Michizane at Hofu Tenmangu, one of the Three Great Deities in Japan
Hofu Tenmangu is the first Tenmangu shrine built in Japan and stands as one of the Three Great Deities alongside Dazaifu and Kitano. It derives its name from Sugawara no Michizane's visit to this place on his way to Dazaifu. Within the grounds is a history museum where visitors can learn about Michizane's life, and the New Year calligraphy competition held to pray for improvement in calligraphy is also famous. As the deity of learning, it attracts many exam-takers, and amulets for academic success are popular souvenirs.
