Akiyoshidai Karst Plateau Walk
A nature walk traversing Akiyoshidai, Japan's largest karst plateau. The unique landscape with white limestone scattered across grassland is spectacular.
Akiyoshidai is Japan's largest karst plateau, formed by the uplift of coral reefs from approximately 130 million years ago, with limestone scattered across vast grassland. While driving on the karst road offers a refreshing experience, walking on the trails to touch the limestone up close is recommended. It displays different faces with each season—fresh greenery after spring's grass burning, vibrant green grassland in summer, and autumn pampas grass fields. Underground, limestone caves including Akiyoshidō extend throughout, allowing you to enjoy both above-ground and underground landscapes.
