Exploring the Ancient Roads of Mogami

In Mogami Town, Yamagata Prefecture, the ancient Dewa Kaido road remains, once walked by pilgrims visiting Dewa Sanzan. Stone-paved paths and signposts still exist within the dense cedar forest, allowing visitors to experience the strange sensation of walking the same path as Edo period travelers. Old tea house ruins and distance markers along the way are also worth seeing. As a road traveled by Matsuo Basho himself, it is also popular with literature enthusiasts.
