Dewa Sanzan (Haguro, Gassan, and Yudono Mountains) has been revered since ancient times as a sacred site of Shugendo. A journey circumambulating these three mountains—representing the present world (Haguro), the afterlife (Gassan), and rebirth (Yudono)—is also called a journey of rebirth. In this program, you climb the 2,446 stone steps of Haguro Mountain and experience authentic ascetic training alongside a yamabushi guide, which includes shojin ryori (Buddhist vegetarian cuisine), waterfall purification rituals, Zen meditation, and more. It is a special experience that connects you with the profound spirituality of Japanese mountain worship.
