Historical Stroll Through Utashinai Coal Mine Ruins
A historical stroll through the ruins and industrial heritage of the coal mining heyday in Utashinai, Japan's smallest city
Utashinai City is Japan's smallest city with a population of approximately 3,000 people. You can trace the vestiges of prosperity from when 46,000 people lived in the coal mines through sites like Hihetsu Roman-za (a former cinema), coal mining residential ruins, and coal preparation plant remains. The local history museum 'Yume-Tsumugi' displays household items and photographs from the coal mining era. It is also known as a filming location for the TV drama 'Yesterday at Hihetsu.' It is a hidden gem where you can quietly experience Hokkaido's industrial heritage, visited by few people.
