Kawato Shuuchiukan Ruins in Tsukigata Town, conveying the dark history of Hokkaido's reclamation
The Kawato Shuuchiukan in Tsukigata Town is the ruins of a facility where convicts were housed and engaged in labor for Hokkaido's reclamation during the Meiji period. Currently operating as a museum, materials and relics from that era are displayed, conveying the harsh history of reclamation to the present day. The brick-built main gate and restored solitary confinement cell exhibits are impressive. Recommended for those wishing to deeply understand Hokkaido's modern history.
