Nikko Urami Falls and Stone Buddhas of Ganman-ga-fuchi
日光市, Tochigi
Hidden gem walk around Nikko Urami Falls visited by Matsuo Basho and the mysterious Jizo statues of Ganman-ga-fuchi
Urami Falls is a famous waterfall praised by Matsuo Basho in his 'Oku no Hosomichi.' The name comes from the fact that you could once walk behind the waterfall. Along the Otani River at Ganman-ga-fuchi, about 70 Jizo statues are lined up, and a legend remains of the 'mysterious Jizo' whose count changes each time they are counted. It's a recommended hidden gem for those who want to enjoy nature and history at a leisurely pace while avoiding the crowds around Tosho-gu.
