The Aikura and Suganuma settlements in Gokayama, together with Shirakawago, are registered as UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Sites as 'Gassho-zukuri Settlements of Shirakawago and Gokayama.' The gassho-zukuri houses, characterized by their steeply pitched thatched roofs, represent an architectural style that embodies the wisdom of life in heavy snow regions.
