The waters off Shiretoko Rausu, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site, is the area in Japan with the highest probability of encountering sperm whales and orcas. From May to July, you can observe pods of orcas, and from July to September, you can watch up close the spectacular blows and diving scenes of sperm whales. Guides on the cruise ship explain the ecology of cetaceans, and you may also encounter Dall's porpoises and minke whales.
