Konpon Chudo of Enryaku-ji on Mount Hiei
Konpon Chudo of Enryaku-ji, the Head Temple of Tendai Buddhism, and the Eternal Lamp that has burned for 1,200 years
Enryaku-ji on Mount Hiei is the head temple of Tendai Buddhism founded by Saicho and is registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Konpon Chudo is the central building of Enryaku-ji, where the Eternal Lamp, which is said to have burned for over 1,200 years, is enshrined in the inner sanctuary. Currently under major renovation, this is a rare opportunity to view the roof structure up close, something normally not visible. You can also walk the paths of the Kaihogyo circumambulation practice that circles the three towers: East, West, and Yokawa.
