Benzaiten of Chikubushima Floating in Lake Biwa
Hoganji Temple and Tsukubusuma Shrine on Chikubushima, the Island of Gods in Northern Lake Biwa
Chikubushima is a small island with a circumference of 2 km floating in northern Lake Biwa, and has been revered since ancient times as the island where gods dwell. The island is home to Hoganji Temple (one of Japan's three main Benzaiten temples) and Tsukubusuma Shrine, with National Treasure Chinese gates and important cultural property buildings lining its grounds. From the sacred grounds that spread beyond the steep stone steps, you can enjoy a spectacular panoramic view of Lake Biwa, and throwing clay dishes (kawarake) to make wishes is a popular activity.
