The Usuki Stone Buddhas form a group of 61 carved Buddhas on tufa rock faces and are designated as a national treasure. Created from the late Heian period through the Kamakura period, the serene expressions of the Buddha statues, beginning with the seated statue of Dainichi Nyorai, bestow deep peace upon all who view them. A walking path circling the stone Buddha group consisting of 4 areas takes approximately 30 minutes. Within the serene atmosphere of this stone Buddha village, one can experience the essence of Japanese Buddhist art.
