Scattered throughout Bungo Ono City are rock-carved Buddha statues carved into welded tuff formed by pyroclastic flows from Mt. Aso. Many of the Buddha statues carved during the Heian to Kamakura periods, such as Inukai Sekibutsu and Sugo Magaibutsu, have been designated as National Important Cultural Properties, and you will be deeply moved by the solemn figures of Buddha carved into the rock walls.
