The Kuju Mountain Range in Oita Prefecture is a mountain group that includes Naka-dake (1,791m), Kyushu's highest peak. In June, Miyama Kirishima (azalea) creates a magnificent spectacle, covering the mountainside with pink flowers. Bougattsu Wetland is an internationally important intermediate wetland designated under the Ramsar Convention. Trekking courses from the trailhead are well-maintained with numerous routes enjoyable for everyone from beginners to advanced hikers. The valley views from Kuju Dream Grand Suspension Bridge are also spectacular.
