Stone Lantern Approach Path of Kasuga Taisha
A World Heritage walk through Kasuga Taisha's approach path, lined with approximately 2,000 stone lanterns, strolling alongside deer
Since its founding in 768, Kasuga Taisha is a World Heritage shrine where approximately 2,000 stone lanterns and approximately 1,000 hanging lanterns have been dedicated. The approach path, covered in primeval forest, is lined with moss-covered stone lanterns where deer leisurely stroll through dappled sunlight, creating a fantastical scene. On Setsubun in February and Obon in August, the Mantoro (Festival of 10,000 Lanterns) is held, with all lanterns illuminated, mysteriously enveloping the shrine grounds in flickering flames.
