Aoshima's Demon's Washboard and Subtropical Plants
The 'Demon's Washboard' surrounding Aoshima is a natural work of art formed by undulating rock formations. The subtropical botanical garden and Aoshima Shrine are also packed with attractions to see.
Aoshima in Miyazaki City is a small island with a circumference of about 1.5 km, surrounded by undulating rock formations known as the 'Demon's Washboard' that appear at low tide. Rock layers from approximately 7 million years ago were uniquely shaped by wave erosion, leaving visitors overwhelmed by nature's dynamic sculptural beauty. The Aoshima Shrine on the island is popular as a power spot for matchmaking. The Aoshima Subtropical Botanical Garden in Miyazaki Prefecture, lush with subtropical plants, is also free to visit and is one of Miyazaki's representative tourist destinations where you can experience a tropical atmosphere.
