Sunayama Beach
A spectacular beach symbolized by a giant arch-shaped rock towering over a small sandy beach in the northern part of Miyakojima. The pristine white powder sand, Miyako Blue sea, and the dramatic contrast created by nature's unique rock formations make it one of Miyakojima's most photogenic spots.
Sunayama Beach is a small beach located in the northwestern part of Miyakojima City, Okinawa Prefecture. True to its name, it stretches out like a hidden gem beyond a white sand dune from the parking lot, known only to those in the know. While typical Miyakojima beaches boast expansive sandy shores, Sunayama Beach is relatively small—just a few hundred meters wide—yet its scenic beauty is unmatched even among Okinawa's beaches. The main attraction is a massive arch-shaped rock formation in the center of the beach, a natural wonder. This Ryukyu limestone has been carved by waves and wind over countless years into a beautiful natural bridge-like form, becoming a landmark of Miyakojima and featured in numerous photography collections, posters, commercials, and travel magazines as a symbol of the island.
The approach to the beach itself makes the Sunayama Beach experience special. As you pass through the pine forest from the parking lot and climb the pure white powder sand dune step by step, the moment you reach the summit, the view suddenly opens before you, revealing the overwhelmingly blue Miyako Blue sea with its gradient, white sand, and the arch rock spreading across your entire field of vision. This "hidden beach beyond the climb" creates a sense of discovery that amplifies visitors' emotions many times over, earning it the reputation of "Okinawa's most emotionally moving beach approach." The sand particles are as fine as star sand, with a delicate texture that feels like powder snow beneath bare feet and becomes addictive.
The sea's transparency is remarkable. In the shallow areas, coral fragments and shells shimmer, and further out, you can spot tropical fish. Many days are calm and suitable for snorkeling, but facing the open ocean, waves can be high, so caution is needed when swimming. The coastline transforms dramatically between high and low tide. At low tide, you can walk under the arch rock, providing perfect photo opportunities. At sunset, the sun sinking in the west silhouettes the arch rock against the sky, with the sky and sea turning a romantic purple-red hue, making it one of Miyakojima's most popular sunset spots.
Sunayama Beach is located at the midpoint between major island bridges like Irabu Bridge, Ikema Bridge, and Kurima Bridge, making it ideally positioned as a hub for Miyakojima tourism with excellent accessibility. Just a 10-minute drive from the Taira business district, it's a must-visit spot for most tourists staying on Miyakojima. The parking lot, restroom facilities, and shower facilities are well-maintained, allowing comfortable short visits. However, as there are no shops or lifeguards on the beach, it's important to bring beverages and sun protection in advance.
One caution: in recent years, the arch rock has deteriorated, and there are periods when approaching the rock or passing under it is restricted due to collapse risks. When visiting, always respect the local signage and rope restrictions, preserving this precious natural heritage for future generations. Still, the view of Sunayama Beach and its arch rock from a distance is an irreplaceable spectacular sight. If you visit Miyakojima, you must stop by this place. Where the Miyako Blue sea, pristine powder sand, and miraculous rock formation unite as one, Sunayama Beach is a unique treasure that embodies the essence of Okinawa's natural beauty.
