Mikasa Geopark and Former Ikushunbetsu Coal Mine Tour
An intellectual stroll through 100-million-year-old rock layers and coal mine heritage in Japan Geopark-certified Mikasa
Mikasa City is a Japan Geopark-certified town where Cretaceous ammonite fossils and Meiji-era coal mine heritage coexist. In the Ikushunbetsu district, visitors can stroll through an "Open-Air Museum" where 100-million-year-old rock layers are exposed, and can also visit the head frame of the former Ikushunbetsu Coal Mine and the remains of miners' housing districts. The Mikasa Municipal Museum displays Japan's largest-class ammonite fossils. It is an intellectual adventure spot where you can experience Hokkaido's 100-million-year history told through coal and fossils with all five senses.
