Toba Pearl Island Experience Tour
An island tour at Toba, the birthplace of pearl farming, where you can learn about the history of pearls and ama diver culture
Mikimoto Pearl Island in Toba City is the historic place where Mikimoto Kokichi succeeded in the world's first pearl farming in 1893. At the pearl museum on the island, exhibits showcase the process of pearl farming and the scientific mechanisms of pearls. You can also watch live ama diver demonstrations, marveling at the skill of the divers in their traditional white diving attire as they plunge into the sea. At Pearl Plaza, you can enjoy shopping for pearl jewelry, and the hands-on experience of extracting a pearl from an akoya oyster shell is also very popular with children.
