Matsumae Castle Town Festival
Experience samurai processions of the Edo period and traditional local performing arts in Matsumae, Hokkaido's only castle town
Matsumae Town is Hokkaido's only castle town. The Matsumae Castle Town Festival, held every August, is the town's largest festival. Samurai in full armor parade through the castle town, and traditional local performing arts unique to Hokkaido—such as Matsumae Kagura and lion dances—are showcased. At night, Matsumae Castle is illuminated and a fireworks display is held. This historical spectacle brightens Hokkaido's short summer. During the festival period, food events including bluefin tuna butchering shows are abundant.
