On the Matsumae coast, during the summer kelp fishing season, you can experience drying kelp alongside fishermen. The work of carefully laying out long natural kelp pulled from the sea, one sheet at a time on the gravel beach, is heavier labor than it appears. But the work under the sea breeze and sun offers a refreshing sensation. You can also taste the finished dried kelp, experiencing firsthand the kelp culture of Matsumae that has continued since the Kitamae-bune era.
