Lake Shinji, which faces Matsue City, is a brackish lake where seawater and freshwater mix, and one of Japan's foremost shijimi production areas. Yamato shijimi from Lake Shinji have large grains and are rich in umami components, earning high acclaim throughout the country. Within Matsue City, restaurants offer a diverse array of shijimi dishes including shijimi miso soup, shijimi rice, shijimi tsukudani, and shijimi ramen.
