Kiyomizu-yaki Kiln Maker's Street Stroll and Hand-painting
Kyoto, Kyoto
Experience hand-painting and the tradition of Kyo-yaki on Gojo-zaka's Kiyomizu-yaki Kiln Maker's Street
From Kyoto's Gojo-zaka to Kiyomizu-dera, 'Chawan-zaka' is an area where Kiyomizu-yaki kiln makers gather. At kiln maker workshops, you can create your own teacup or rice bowl while learning the delicate hand-painting techniques of Kyo-yaki. You'll receive direct instruction from craftspeople in traditional techniques including underglaze blue and overglaze painting, with your finished piece sent to your home after firing. Visiting the kilns to discover your favorite ceramics is also part of the enjoyment.
