Yokosuka · Sarushima Uninhabited Island Exploration
Explore the ruins of a former military fortress and a Ghibli-like green world on Sarushima, Tokyo Bay's only natural island
From Yokosuka's Mikasa Pier, it's about 10 minutes by boat to Sarushima, Tokyo Bay's only natural island. The island, once used as a military fortress, retains brick tunnels and artillery emplacements covered with lush green ivy that evokes the world of Studio Ghibli. The walking paths around the island can be explored in about an hour, and in summer you can also enjoy BBQ and swimming. This mysterious space, where modern Japanese military history and abundant nature coexist, is a different world just one hour from the city center.
