Making Hot Spring Eggs at Hakone Owakudani
Experience the breath of the Earth by making and eating black eggs in the volcanic steam vents of Hakone Owakudani
Hakone Owakudani is an explosion crater formed by a volcanic eruption approximately 3,000 years ago, where white volcanic steam still rises today in an impressive landscape. The 'black eggs' made here are a specialty that turns pitch black due to hydrogen sulfide and iron from the hot springs adhering to the shells. According to legend, eating one extends your lifespan by seven years. You can observe the process of making them by immersing them in hot spring water right beside the steam vent area, and eating freshly made black eggs while taking in the spectacular views is a highlight of Hakone tourism.
