A Stroll Through Sengan-en World Heritage Garden
At Sengan-en World Heritage Site, with Sakurajima and Kinko Bay as borrowed scenery, savor the history and beauty of Satsuma's gardens
Sengan-en is a detached villa built by Shimazu Mitsuhisa, the 19th generation, in 1658. It is a magnificent borrowed scenery garden with Sakurajima viewed as an artificial hill and Kinko Bay viewed as a pond. It is also included as a constituent asset of the UNESCO World Heritage Site 'Meiji Japan's Industrial Revolution Heritage,' and visitors can also view the ruins of a reverberatory furnace. In the tea room within the garden, you can enjoy Kagoshima matcha and ryobo mochi, and at Shokoku Shuseikan, you can learn about the modernization history of the Satsuma Domain. A commemorative photo with Sakurajima in the background is a classic memory of any trip to Kagoshima.
