Spectacular Scenery of Shodoshima's Senmaida Terraced Rice Fields
Experience the spectacular scenery of Japan's pristine terraced rice fields at Shodoshima's Nakayama Senmaida, overlooking the Seto Inland Sea
The Senmaida terraced rice fields spread across Shodoshima's Nakayama district form a spectacular scenery spot with approximately 700 terraced rice fields cascading in steps against the backdrop of the Seto Inland Sea. Selected as one of Japan's Hundred Selection of Terraced Rice Fields, the most beautiful seasons are May to June when the sky reflects on the water surface after rice planting, and September when the rice ears shine golden. The mushi okuri fire procession (held every June) creates a fantastical sight that has also served as a movie filming location. Onigiri made from the terraced field rice is also exquisite.
