Kitaibaraki and Goura Coast: Hexagonal Pavilion and Cliffs
Hexagonal pavilion standing on cliffs with stunning Pacific Ocean views at Goura Coast, connected to Okakura Tenshin
The Goura Coast in Kitaibaraki City, Ibaraki Prefecture, is where Meiji-era artist Okakura Tenshin spent his final years. The vermillion hexagonal pavilion (Kanrantei) standing atop sheer cliffs is where Tenshin would contemplate, offering powerful views of the rough Pacific waves crashing below. The Tenshin Memorial Goura Art Museum is nearby, where you can appreciate both the history of Japanese art and the natural sculptural beauty simultaneously. Visiting in winter to enjoy angler fish hot pot is also recommended.
