Weekend Trip Touring Tamba Ware Pottery Kilns

Tamba Sasayama City is a production area for Tamba ware (Tachiuki ware), one of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns. In the Tachiuki area, where approximately 60 kiln workshops gather, you can enjoy artwork exhibitions from each workshop, climbing kiln tours, and ceramic art experiences. Tamba ware is characterized by its simple, rustic appearance created by natural ash adhering in the kiln without applied glaze, known as 'ash-coating.' At Suenosato, you can view and compare works from numerous kiln workshops side by side, and you can also directly visit the studios of artists whose creations appeal to you.
