Hyakuninbama Beach in Erimo Town
えりも町, Hokkaido
The desolate sand dunes of Hyakuninbama extending south of Erimo Cape
Hyakuninbama extends about 15 kilometers along the south side of Erimo Cape. The name is said to derive from a legend that a hundred crew members from a shipwreck once lost their lives here. Windbreak forests have been planted in the desolate sand dunes, creating a unique landscape. Walking along the promenade through the forest where a memorial monument stands, one can feel the harshness of the sea and the mark of human endeavor.
