Fukuyama Tomo-no-ura Port Town Stroll
Stroll through Tomo-no-ura, a historic port town known for waiting for tides. A precious town where Edo-era harbor facilities such as nightlights and wooden piers still remain.
Tomo-no-ura is a port town located roughly in the center of the Seto Inland Sea and has flourished since ancient times as a port where ships wait for favorable tides. It is Japan's only port where five harbor facilities—nightlights, wooden piers, wharfs, beacon fire sites, and ship administration offices—remain intact, and has been designated as a National Important Preservation District for Groups of Historic Buildings. It is also known as the setting for the Iroha-maru Incident associated with Sakamoto Ryōma, making it an irresistible spot for history enthusiasts. The charming streetscape, which has also been used as a movie filming location, is perfect for a leisurely stroll with camera in hand.
