Hachijo Island is a volcanic island located approximately 290km south of Tokyo's center, in the southern part of the Izu Islands. It features a distinctive gourd-shaped formation with two stratovolcanoes: Mihara-yama (East Mountain) and Hachijo-Fuji (West Mountain). With an area of approximately 69 square kilometers and a population of about 7,000, it is the second-largest island in the Izu Islands after Oshima. It belongs to the subtropical climate zone, remaining warm throughout the year with landscapes that evoke tropical charm despite being within Tokyo Prefecture.
The island's symbol, Hachijo-Fuji, stands at 854m elevation—a conical volcano with elegant, Mount Fuji-like slopes. From the crater rim trail, panoramic views encompass the Pacific Ocean and the entire island. In contrast, Mihara-yama on the south side is an older volcano enveloped in dense subtropical forest. Along the hiking trails, tree ferns (hego and Asplenium antiquum) cluster together, offering a primordial forest atmosphere.
The coastline showcases striking contrasts between black lava and white sand, with Sokodo Beach and Otchiyoga-hama serving as premier swimming and snorkeling destinations. The highly transparent waters host sea turtles, hammerhead sharks, and migratory fish at numerous spots, making it world-renowned as a mecca for divers. The Kuroshio Current flows around the island, supporting a rich marine ecosystem.
Hot springs abound, with scenic open-air baths like Uramiga-taki Onsen, Ashiyu Kirameki, and Miharashi-no-yu offering sweeping Pacific views—many free or low-cost. During the Edo period, the island served as an exile destination, nurturing a unique culture. The traditional craft Kihachijo (yellow silk textile) is designated as a National Traditional Craft. Island sushi, kusaya (dried fish), ashitaba cuisine, and island shochu make for distinctive local food culture.
Accessible by a 55-minute flight from Haneda Airport or a 10.5-hour ferry journey aboard the Tachibana Maru from Tokyo's Takeashiba Pier. Despite being within day-trip range of Tokyo, it offers a completely different temporal rhythm—a true paradise. With diverse activities including diving, hot springs, mountain climbing, and whale watching, it stands as a definitive must-visit destination in Izu Islands tourism.
