Walking Tour of Obama and the Mackerel Road

Obama City is a port town in Wakasa Bay, known as the starting point of the Mackerel Road that transported mackerel to Kyoto. The historic district centered around Izumi Town Shopping Street features scattered merchant houses and temples from the Edo period, offering an atmospheric town walk. After learning the history at the Mackerel Road Museum, the standard course is to savor the local specialty grilled mackerel sushi and hesshiko (salted mackerel). You can also enjoy touring Wakasa lacquered chopstick workshops and purchasing fresh seafood at the morning market.
