Esashi Oiwake National Championship
Experience Japanese traditional music at the national championship of Esashi Oiwake, Hokkaido's oldest folk song
Esashi Oiwake is Hokkaido's oldest folk song and an intangible cultural heritage that carries forward the history of Esashi, which prospered through herring fishing. Each September, the national championship draws singers from across the country, and melancholic melodies fill the venue. Throughout the competition period, the entire town is immersed in Oiwake, featuring street performances and Oiwake experience workshops. At the Esashi Oiwake Hall, you can learn the history and techniques of Oiwake year-round.
