The Uwajima Waryō Grand Festival 'Ushi-oni Festival' is the largest festival in the Nanyo region, showcasing giant Ushi-oni floats (creatures with an ogre's head and a bull's body) parading through the city. The 5-6 meter long Ushi-oni are made of bamboo and washi paper, and the spectacle of young people energetically carrying them is awe-inspiring. The festival also features fireworks displays on the sea and running processions, and for three days in late July, the entire town is enveloped in festive excitement. Along with local specialties like Uwajima tai-meshi and jako-ten, immerse yourself in the summer spirit of Nanyo.
