Doro Gorge
A magnificent gorge carved in a V-shape by the Kitayama River, a tributary of the Kumano River. An emerald-green river surface and white cliff faces exceeding 50 meters in height stretch for approximately 31 km, making it one of the most scenic spots on the Kii Peninsula.
Doro Gorge (Doro Kyo) is a large canyon formed by the Kitayama River (part of the Kumano River system), which flows through the border of Wakayama, Mie, and Nara prefectures, eroding quartz porphyry bedrock over a long period of time. Spanning approximately 31 km in total length, it is divided into three sections from upstream: 'Oku Doro,' 'Kami Doro,' and 'Shimo Doro (Doro Hachitcho).' Particularly, the section called 'Doro Hachitcho' in the Shimo Doro area is designated as a Special Scenic Spot and Natural Monument by the nation, making it a representative scenic beauty of the Kii Peninsula.
The greatest attraction is the contrast between the deep, clear emerald-green river surface and the white cliff faces exceeding 50 meters in height standing on both banks. Columnar jointed rock formations and bizarre rock formations continue in succession, with green ferns and pines adding color to the rocky surfaces. Since ancient times, it has been counted as one of the 'Three Greatest Canyon Beauties of Japan,' and Meiji-era literary master Yosano Tekkan praised its scenery.
The best way to enjoy this gorge in all its grandeur is by waterjet boat cruise departing from Shiko, Kumanogawa Town, Shingu City. The boat journey travels upstream along the main stream of the Kumano River to Doro Gorge on the Kitayama River, taking approximately two and a half hours round trip—a refreshing experience of gazing up at the cliff faces on both sides while being splashed with water. Onboard, the boatman provides witty commentary explaining the various named rock formations such as Shishi Rock, Kame Rock, and Matsutake Rock. Along the way, you can also disembark near Tado (Doro Hotel) for a walk, experiencing the tranquility of the cliff walls reflected in the river surface.
Included in the Kumano area of the UNESCO World Heritage site 'Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range,' it is a place visited by many pilgrims on their way to Kumano Sanzan. In the fresh green season, the greenery covering the rocky surfaces is reflected in the river, summer brings crowds seeking coolness, autumn sees the foliage painting the cliffs in vivid colors, and winter offers the beauty of a serene gorge with few visitors. Access is somewhat inconvenient, requiring over an hour by bus or car from Shingu Station, but the sense of remoteness is all the more exceptional. It is a hidden scenic gem of the Kii Peninsula that you should visit as part of a pilgrimage along the Kumano Kodo.
