Sawara in Katori City, Chiba Prefecture is a merchant town that flourished through Tone River water transportation. The groups of traditional merchant houses with storehouse architecture lined along Onogawa River have been designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Historic Buildings, and can be viewed from the water by boat. On approximately 30-minute boat tours guided by boatmen, you can enjoy the scenic storehouses reflected in the water where willows sway. The former residence and memorial hall of Inoh Tadataka are nearby, making it a wonderful spot to enjoy both historical exploration and sightseeing.
