Sawara's Little Edo - Historic Warehouses Along the Onogawa River
Tour the warehouse-style townscape along the Onogawa River and Inoh Tadataka Memorial Museum in Sawara, Chiba's Little Edo
Sawara is a merchant town that prospered through Tonegawa River transportation. The warehouse-style buildings remaining along the Onogawa River have been designated as an Important Traditional Building Preservation District. It features the former residence and memorial museum of Inoh Tadataka, who created Japan's first accurate survey map, and you can view Edo-period merchant house architecture up close. The townscape viewed from the water by boat tour has great charm, and taking a break at a traditional Japanese confectionery shop is also recommended.
