Onjuku - Ebisu Festival and the Culture of Ama (Female Divers)
御宿町, Chiba
A seaside walk exploring the ama culture of Chiba's Onjuku and the history of cultural exchange with Mexico
Onjuku is known as the birthplace of Japan-Mexico cultural exchange, as the Spanish ship San Francisco ran aground there in 1609 and villagers rescued the crew. Near the Iwawada Coast where the Mexico Memorial Tower stands, there are materials conveying the culture of former ama diving, and the July Onjuku Fireworks Festival is a symbol of summer. There is also a sandy beach that was the model for the children's song 'Tsuki no Sabaku' (Moon of the Desert).
