The Nottsuke Torii in Betsumi
別海町, Hokkaido
A torii standing quietly near the tip of Nottsuke Peninsula, sinking into the sea
Near the tip of Nottsuke Peninsula, Japan's largest sand spit, a torii from a shrine stands quietly among the ruins of a former settlement. The torii, now halfway submerged in the sea due to rising sea levels and ground subsidence, symbolizes the transience of this place. Surrounding it are standing dead trees of the Tododwala forest, creating a landscape that feels like the end of the world.
