The Yamagata Hanagasa Matsuri held in Yamagata City from August 5-7 each year is counted as one of the four major Tohoku festivals and a symbol of summer. Holding hanagasa decorated with safflower, dancers parade through the main streets of the city to the chant of 'Yassho, Makasho.' Approximately 10,000 dancers participate and attract about 1 million spectators. There are various styles ranging from traditional authentic hanagasa dances to creative hanagasa dances, and areas are set up where anyone can join in.
