Takachiho Night Kagura
A traditional Takachiho performing art that expresses Japanese mythology through sacred dance, including Amaterasu's opening of the Iwato. Experienced amid ethereal bonfires.
Takachiho Night Kagura is a sacred ritual designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan. Each year from November through February, 33 dances are performed all night at kagura lodges in various villages. The 'Opening of the Iwato,' inspired by the myth of Amaterasu hiding in a stone door, is particularly stunning. The year-round program at Takachiho Shrine offers four representative dances from the 33, viewable in approximately one hour—an accessible introduction to this tradition. Performed amid enchanting bonfires, these ancient sacred rituals provide a precious opportunity to experience the profound depth of Japanese culture.
