Ancient Izumo History Museum
A museum built next to Izumo Taisha, where you can deeply learn about the mythology and history of ancient Izumo.
The Shimane Prefectural Ancient Izumo History Museum is located east of Izumo Taisha and comprehensively introduces the mythology, history, and culture of Izumo. The actual display of a massive pillar (Uzu Pillar) discovered in 2000 from the grounds of Izumo Taisha, and a scale model reproducing the former grand shrine building of Izumo Taisha are remarkable. Archaeological treasures including 358 bronze swords unearthed from the Arakojin'ya Ruins and 39 bronze bells from the Kamo Iwakura Ruins—National Treasures that speak to the power of ancient Izumo—are gathered together in one place. By visiting together with a pilgrimage to Izumo Taisha, you can gain a deeper understanding.
