Ainu Culture Learning・Upopoy
Japan's first Ainu culture national center. Learn Ainu culture through traditional dance and craft experiences.
Upopoy (Symbolic Space of Coexistence of Ainu and Other Peoples) is Japan's first Ainu culture national center, which opened in Shiraoi Town in 2020. The National Ainu Museum introduces the history, culture, and lifestyle of the Ainu people using the latest exhibition technology. At the outdoor traditional kotan (settlement), you can experience recreations of chise (traditional dwellings) and Mukuri (mouth harp) playing. The theater hosts traditional dance performances daily, and there is also an attached restaurant where you can enjoy Ainu cuisine. Various workshops are held, including Ainu pattern embroidery and wood carving experiences.
